Robotic assisted surgery is a method by which surgeons can offer surgery to patients in a minimally invasion fashion. It allows for the many techniques of open surgery and laparoscopic surgery to be united and utilized via the robotic platform. With an experienced surgeon, this technology can afford patient less pain, less blood loss, shorter recovery period, while maintaining comparable or achieving better oncological outcomes when compared to open surgery.
Dr. Vernon Orton is our Robotic Surgery expert at our clinic. He completed his fellowship in robotic surgery at City of Hope Hospital in Duarte, California. After his fellowship training he taught robotic surgery as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Urology at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Throughout his career he have performed over 800 cases and has taught robotic surgery to many physicians, residents, and medical students.
On September 22nd, 2016 Dr. Orton performed the first robotic-assisted, minimally invasive surgery, using the Da Vinci robotic technology in Whatcom County. Dr. Veron said “I am excited to offer robotic-assisted surgery to Bellingham and the Whatcom County Community. This is the latest technology in urologic surgery and I know it will benefit our patients.” The robotic surgery allows the surgeon to make smaller incisions and more precise movements. It typically results in less blood loss, shorter hospital stays, less pain, and equivalent oncological outcomes compared with conventional open surgeries. Dr. Orton is a welcomed addition to Bellingham Urology Group and during his time here has already had many happy patients.
